And now there are videos from guitarists like Mike from The-Art-of-Guitar (who even showcases bad tab books) and Ben Eller. You could find much better tabs in Guitar World magazine by transcribers like Jimmy Brown and Jeff Perrin.
That said, while I want to be charitable to the people who worked on the books, the books aren't great. You asking if the transcriber even played guitar reminds me of something I heard about early rock music books (like Beatles era) that may have been done by pianists without guitar experience. And without those resources, it can be pretty challenging picking parts out of albums with heavy overtone-generating distortion and layers of guitar tracks. The stuff found on the Internet is hit or miss too, but hobbyists probably have more time and-nowadays with isolated stems and live videos-resources. I want to be fair, and I'm guessing that the folks working on those books had deadlines to meet, didn't have access to isolated tracks and the limitless live footage we can easily find now, and may or may not have been big fans of the band-it's a job.

There's a lot of notorious weirdness in those books, like full major chords where James is just playing power chords, riffs played totally wrong, weird positions for the leads, etc.
